You can walk to it during low tide but at hide tide it is completely surrounded by the sea. This island is located in Normandy in the northern part of France. The abbey at the top and the fortifications all around make the Mont Saint Michel one of the prettiest destinations in France. The gilded statue of Saint Michael at the top has recently received a complete restoration. Frosting on the cake: it remained loyal to France during the Hundred Years War!
We then admired the work of an Italian painter who is featured the Louvre Museum: Domenico Ghirlandaio's "Visitation". This moment of tenderness and adoration between St Elizabeth and Mary depicts the two pregnant women together. Elizabeth is pregnant with Saint John the Baptist, who, in his womb, reacts to the presence of Jesus as Mary is pregnant with him.
The next day, I decided to teach you how to ask for the metro (assuming mostly that you are in Paris, but it will obviously work for any place that has a metro system): Hello, where is the metro please? "Bonjour, où est le metro s'il vous plaît?" You will have to click on our instagram page to see the video: https://www.instagram.com/yourfrenchadventure
On Wednesday, our French food was my own mom's recipe for the Coq au Vin, you can see the full recipe on the previous blog entry. DEEEELICIOUS!
The monument of the week was the mesmerizing Pont Alexandre III (Alexander III bridge) located in Paris. One of its most dazzling views. It connects the Champs-Elysées district to the Invalides (where Napoléon's tomb is located) and the Eiffel Tower. Unfolding over the Seine River, this deck arch bridge features n magnificent decor, made of winged horses, Art Nouveau lights, Nymphs and cherubs. One of the most romantic places of Paris...
The movie of the week was Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain, simply translated Amelie in English. Who hasn't seen this uplifting French movie? I remember going to see it in Paris and leaving the theater on the Boulevard Saint-Michel with a smile on my face that remained there for hours. Audrey Tautou is so fresh and such a bright light. Matthieu Kassovitz will make your heart melt. With the narration done by the incredible André Dussolier the magic happens. This Jean-Pierre Jeunet movie is a little jewel... If you haven't seen it, go straight to netflix!
Last but not least, we discussed King Francis I of France, (François Ier). Painted here by Jean Clouet circa 1530, Francis I is our most famous king during the French Renaissance. Patron of the arts, he is the king who succeeded in attracting Leonardo da Vinci to Amboise where the latter died. If you have ever visited Chambord, you will have recognized this face.
Au revoir till next week!
